National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork

One way professional therapists and bodyworkers demonstrate competency is through achieving the status of being Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. This certification represents the highest professional credentials in the field and incorporate ethics, eligibility, practice and competency testing.

National certification represents the achievement of a number of steps on the part of the certificant. These steps include meeting standards of education, training and/or experience and successful completion of the National Certification Examination. Being nationally certified requires practitioners to provide periodic evidence that they participate in lifelong learning to keep current with changing definitions of competency. Certificants must also agree to uphold NCBTMB's Standards for Practice and Code of Ethics. Failure to adhere to the Code of Ethics can result in a certification being removed.

The NCBTMB's certification program is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. It protects the consumer, the profession and employers by insuring individuals who attain this qualification posses core skills, abilities, knowledge and attributes consistent with massage therapy standards and criteria.
