Evaluation & Treatment of Nerve Injuries- Part A
Injuries to the nervous system such as piriformis syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome or adverse neural tension cause many people to seek the help of massage therapists. Join Whitney in a fascinating exploration of the nervous system and how to evaluate and treat a wide variety of nerve tissue disorders.     8 CE Hours.  (Hands On Course)

Just Say NO! to the Thumb & Awkward Postures
Designed to assist practitioners in preventing occupational injuries, this course emphasizes two essential rules of safe body mechanics: Say NO to the thumb and avoid awkward postures. Participants will learn a “no thumb” approach to deep work. We will also examine how awkward postures can be replaced with ergonomically sound alternatives. 4 CE Hours. (Hands On Course)

Instructor: Barbara Frye
Barbara Frye has been a massage educator and therapist in private practices since 1990, coordinated IBM’s body mechanics program, and authored Body Mechanics for Manual Therapists: A Functional Approach to Self-Care, 3rd Edition. She has a massage and Feldenkrais practice at the Pluspunkt Center for Therapy and Advanced Studies near Zurich, Switzerland.


Career Opportunities in the Spa Industry
Participants in this session will have an opportunity to re-examine their role in light of the expanding spa industry from a leading expert and International SPA Association (ISPA) board member.  Topics include: spa requirements, expectations, and career paths for massage therapists in a spa setting including education on the ISPA Spa Professional Career Guide; logistical considerations for a spa business; and successful business models. 4 CE Hours.

With over 18 years of leadership experience in hospitality, education, and health care, Jaime Huffman is the Executive Spa Director and member of the Senior Operations Team at the Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa in Asheville, NC.




Soft-Tissue Techniques for Piriformis Syndrome
Piriformis syndrome is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints presented by clients. In this hands-on session, we will discuss the causes and prevention of piriformis syndrome, review and palpate the relevant anatomy, learn basic assessment tests, and practice hands-on techniques that include transverse friction, pin and stretch techniques, and isolytic contractions. 75% of the course is hands-on.  4 CE Hours. (Hands On Course)

Instructor: Robert McAtee
Robert E. McAtee, NCTMB, is a 21-year member of AMTA and the co-author of “Facilitated Stretching”. He regularly presents workshops on facilitated stretching, massage, and soft-tissue injury care throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Unlocking Computer Shoulder
As therapists, we recognize the prevalence of postural distortion and pain patterns associated with computer use. Our practices are full of clients seeking relief from habitual job functions where computer use is required, coupled with hours of “surfing the web.” This class will focus on unwinding the cumulative effects of elevated shoulders, kyphotic spinal curvature, medial rotation of the humerus and forward head posture. 4 CE Hours.  (Hands On Course)

Teaching Research Literacy
The Massage Therapy Foundation is offering this fast-paced, highly interactive class for all massage school educators. The intention of the class is to help teachers to use research findings in their classrooms. Whether you teach massage therapy, A&P, or professional development, you will come away with new tools and lesson plans for use in the classroom. Teachers should come prepared with lesson plans and areas of interest for this interactive class. 4 CE Hours.

Pete Whitridge is the former Assistant Director at the Florida School of Massage in Gainesville. He teaches Myofascial Components of Pain workshops throughout the Southeast, as well as Florida law and business building classes.

Case Reports: Transforming an Interesting Case into an Informative Publication
Have you gained insight from a specific case that could contribute to the knowledge base of our profession? This workshop will guide you through the steps leading to potential publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Bring a planned or actual case with you and be prepared to draft a case report. 4 CE Hours.

Karen Boulanger has been in practice since 1999 and has published research on public health and massage. She is also the Practice Section editor of the IJTMB.






Incorporating Effective Injury Prevention and Ergonomics Into Your Massage Curriculum
Learn the most effective techniques to reduce the risks of injury among massage therapists due to the physical demands of their work. Instructors will also learn how to incorporate essential prevention concepts at key moments in an existing curriculum, and reinforce them with kinesthetic activities, group exercises and mutual coaching. 4 CE Hours.  (Hands On Course)

Instructor: Lauriann Greene
Lauriann Greene, CEAS, is co-author of Save Your Hands! The Complete Guide to Injury Prevention and Ergonomics for Manual Therapists, 2nd Edition. A former massage therapist, she has been a leading writer, speaker and researcher on injury prevention for manual therapists since 1995.



Trio-Trades for Assessment of Body Mechanics & Applied Movement for Massage
This three-part assessment utilizes adaptable, take-home checklists for assessing bodymechanics and massage "table-side" practices. Using "before and after" demos and discussions, teams of three therapists take turns observing, working and receiving massage in 30-minute segments. Suggestions for modifications and evaluation round out this fun, interactive workshop. 4 CE Hours.

Pathology, Pharmacology, and Massage: an Introduction to Key Concepts
It’s safe to say that every practicing massage therapist probably has some clients who take medication to manage their health, but the interaction between bodywork and pharmaceuticals is a very under-studied field. This class will introduce key concepts about how prescription and non-prescription drugs work to change function. These concepts will then be extended to include how massage and bodywork modalities may further influence this process. 4 CE Hours.

Ruth Werner is a massage therapist, writer, educator, and Education Chair and President Elect of the Massage Therapy Foundation.  She has served on committees for the Utah Department of Public Licensing, the AMTA, the National Certifying Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, and the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards. She was the AMTA Council of Schools Teacher of the Year in 2005.
