AMTA 2010 Massage Therapy Schools Summit

AMTA’s 2010 Massage Therapy Schools Summit will bring together massage therapy school owners, administrators and teachers to discuss important issues for the future of the profession.  This year’s Summit, an expansion of the annual AMTA schools conference, will seek input on school-related issues and provide a venue for frank, inclusive dialogue on how school can flourish and the need to educate massage therapy students for successful practice.  The massage world is rapidly evolving and schools need to be in the forefront to ensure quality education and sustainable programs.

This year there are specific interest tracks for part time and full time faculty, as well as massage school owners and administrators.  AMTA encourages schools to send two representatives – an administrator or owner who can participate in and contribute to the discussions and programming for them and a faculty representative to participate in teacher-focused discussions.   The integration of these two perspectives can foster a viable, positive school environment.

If current textbooks do not adequately cover the BOK content, what content needs to be developed and by whom? What suggestions do schools have to make the BOK more useful to the members of the education domain?

Hospital-Based Massage

Massage therapy schools are charged with preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s marketplace. Recent analyses of the rapidly changing healthcare marketplace show a growing need for massage therapists who are prepared to practice in acute care settings.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that massage therapy’s growing acceptance as a medical tool, particularly by the medical provider and insurance industry, will account for the greatest impact on the expected 20 percent increase in new job growth for massage therapists from 2006 to 2016.   Are your students prepared to provide care in a busy hospital setting to a patient confined to a hospital bed and connected to sophisticated machines? Learn how one school is meeting this need and how you can expand your curriculum to include a hospital-based massage therapy program.
